   NOTE: If you don’t already have the BG-E6 grip, you do NOT need to purchase this battery magazine. It is an included accessory with the BG-E6 vertical grip. This item is a replacement for what already comes in the box.

   The battery magazine allows you to use 6 AA batteries to power your Canon EOS 5D Mark II with vertical grip. With very limited use of the LCD screen (no Live View), and no video, you can get maybe a couple hundred shots off of a high quality set of rechargeable NiMH batteries. It’s far, far less than you can get with a single LP-E6 battery pack, and certainly a drop in the bucket compared to the literally thousands of exposures possible with two LP-E6′s mounted in the grip.

   But that’s not really what the AA battery magazine is about. It’s an emergency-use tool for photographers that find themselves in the middle of nowhere with a couple of drained LP-E6′s. You can find AA batteries just about anywhere, but good luck finding an LP-E6 at the nearest gas station.

   And it’s a sturdy little unit too, so you can just throw it in a bag without worrying about keeping it protected from destruction. Obviously, the nifty battery reporting features of the LP-E6′s will not be available while using the battery magazine, but that is to be expected.

   All in all, it’s one of those “You Don’t Miss It Until You Need It” accessories that is worth carrying around, considering its relatively small size and negligible weight.

   Have not used yet. Did not know when we bought a battery grip from another vendor that this item came included in the battery grip purchase. We have two now and hadn’t used either.
